Why I Was An Atheist?

In general people think atheist are people who are ignorant or angry or stuck down in life. Let me clarify that an atheist probably knows more about religion than an average person does, trust me people, we are not angry or sad, in fact we are more content, satisfied, happy and see things more clearly. I am an atheist and people strongly debate against on this topic with me and talking to general people about religion is like conversing with a 2 year old because of a simple fact that people are very happy with their concepts and any change in their thinking process just sort of causes a discomfort in their mind, thoughts and daily lifestyle, it seems threatening to them to question a concept which they are believing in since their birth.

I will try to explain my point of view in a very brief way but please excuse me if you feel my view to be a bit incomplete or feel something is left out.

How I came by it.

In the starting we are all the same passage, we are thought to pray and love an imaginary person called God, who we never made to question on. We are dived into religion, Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhism etc. That’s exactly what happened to me, I, being born in a Hindu family (and studied in a Christian school) was thought that God was Rama, the king who saved Sita from the devil Ravan (whom he, Rama, later kicked out due to allegations, who at that time was also pregnant). Then I learned about the Devi Durga, who fought with the undefeatable beast to only in the end save us all. It’s amazing that up to a basic point I never questioned this, even after how ridiculous it all sounded. I never questioned how big bang theory, a proven fact, fit into all this? Or if there was one god, then who was he? And I find the concept of god to be sexist, as in to why a he? And if you want me to believe in a single god, then who do I consider that person to be? Jesus or The father or the holy spirit or Rama or Shiva or Durga? Am I the only one who finds this amusing?

So at a certain point when I read a few parts of the Bhagwat Gita or the bible, which also has a lot contradicting statement, I thought why not read something more logical. And to be fair I read these holy books just out of the love for this imaginary person and also curiosity. So I read the God Delusion, which I must say is an amazing book, so then after some extensive research, I came to a point where I could accept the truth that god does not exist.

Being a daily life atheist.

I come by people who ask me how it is to be an atheist in your daily life, is life more boring or hopeless cause normal people got god! This always sounds very funny to me! I come by people who are not very accepting of the fact and to be very honest, I will often fail in a debate of the existence of god, I am not a scientist, in fact I feel I might lack in the normal IQ of a person. So if you’re asking me if my life is a bit less magical? So it’s not! If my life ends to be meaningless? Because many people feel without a god life is a bit meaningless, then no. let me answer why…

Sita (from Ramayana) was born from the earth and in the end disintegrated back into it, more like dust to dust if you know what I am trying to say. I, giving a Ramayana and a biblical reference might seem ironical to you but I am just trying to answer you, so getting back to the point. I feel that I am a part of something big and something real and that is the earth, according to science, in the end we are all energy and energy cannot be destroyed just transferred, so if the big bang created us all then, we are an energy of the earth itself and a part of something way bigger that only nature in its secrets can understand and not a guy with beards who everybody claims sits in the cloud.

My life is more magical because every day I go out, I feel an immense connection of the earth’s gravity pulling me in it then an imaginary concept of gods love!

So whole in whole, I am a very happy light person, with no religion because I feel religion is what’s wrong with the whole world and an end of religion would lead to world peace, I do enjoy festivals and church, temple, gurudwara or a mosque immensely cause we are not thought to differentiate or hate people on ANY basis. I am a very happy girl who believes in magic, love and energies what I just don’t believe in is a man up there who everybody thinks controls us!

Thank You! Please leave a comment, criticisms is taken happily and I would be glad to answer any questions you have! Ciao

  1. There is nothing wrong about being an atheist. Only, just like the way you don't like when theist push their beliefs on you, theist, and even people like me open to others being agnostic or atheist feel a little bad when you just say "an Imaginary Person God".
Sure, Holy books have contracting lines, Epics and etymology, if I'm using the correct word, have a lot of complicated stuff, and some of the relifous beliefs have been disproven by science, I still believe God exists.
Maybe not in the form we think of him to be. BT somewhere, in some forn of existence, he's real. You say you're an ahtiest from your experience, I say I'm a theist from mine. I've had a LOT, trust me, instances where God did help me, ie events happened you just can't call coincidences to this extent so many times.

True, people have modified the meaning of religion a lot, beliefs have evolved a lot, but the main reason behind it was to induce good values. But today, a lot of crimes are committed in his name, by people supposedly doing things for the sake of religion.

Anyways, fantastic article! Can't wait to see more from you.
