K - Whats Love?
This post isn’t about the coronavirus, would that be more interesting? No, I’m just trying to journalise here. The hardest things to do in life are usually the simple ones. Not making an effort is so much easier than even trying to make one. I don’t know if I am a writer, deep down I think it's the only talent I have but I believe I have no original voice. I’ve also heard that a million times from people, I believe I need to develop one but I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember now but I don’t think I’ve ever made a real effort. But it's fine folks (Hello to the two people who read this!) if you never REALLY tried, you never actually lost anything! So, in the end, it’s comfortable to leave my unfinished and uninspired articles here on my blog.
The Greek philosophers said there are three things a man should do - plant a tree, pass their knowledge to a younger generation (a fancy way of saying you should have a child) and write. Though many Greek philosophers never actually wrote, who am I to judge. So let’s try a simple conversation I can imagine on a hard topic and try to philosophies it.
K- what's love?
J- who knows? I’ve read books but I don’t think anyone actually knows.
K - wouldn't it be boring if we did know? What would poets write romantic and mystical songs about? What special feeling would your favourite song feel like? If only - if only we knew.
J- So what is love? Let’s steal a concept from Plato’s book The symposium, you give one definition and I give one? Give me one
K- love is blind.
J- is that a positive thing or negative?
K- I think it can be both. When you’re blind in love, everything feels good. When in love you can give away everything you have and it would feel wonderful because it makes someone you love happy. Even though it could be really harmful to you.
J- I agree but wouldn’t that be a characteristic of love rather than love though?
K- Yeah I think I would agree that it is rather a quality than its actual definition
J-. And also wouldn’t this make Love a harmful thing to be involved in though?
K- Harmful? To the person in love?
J - Yes
K - I wouldn't think so, I understand where you’re coming from but if love is truly blind, it could walk through fire without actually dying or burning, making it almost like a superpower.
J - I think you’re missing my point.
K - all I’m trying to say that it wouldn’t matter because humans derive pleasure out of a lot of things that harm them. Love could be one but then again it’s blind so…
J - what is love blind to or towards?
K - That’s complicated, I think love is blind towards bad intentions.
J - That doesn’t sound good
K- yeah it doesn’t.
J- so to sum up what you said - Love is blind even towards bad intentions and can be self-injurious but brings great joy. So love is a drug and everyone in love is a junkie!
K- very original! But that can’t be it, can it?
J - no, so here’s one of mine, Love is a God quality, no! LOVE IS THE GOD QUALITY!
J - no, so here’s one of mine, Love is a God quality, no! LOVE IS THE GOD QUALITY!
K - oh fuck you!
J - That’s not a very good counter!
K- if you claim its a God quality, we’ll have to objectively look at God itself and then analyze the quality, why would anyone do this to themselves! In this economy!
K- if you claim its a God quality, we’ll have to objectively look at God itself and then analyze the quality, why would anyone do this to themselves! In this economy!
J - (laughing hysterically) okay then let us do that! Or you can give up - you cry baby.
K - What’s a God quality J?
J- Okay you know how they say -
K - They - that’s very specific!
J - shut up, I can’t remember the philosopher’s name! But one of the best definitions I’ve heard on God is that you don’t really need to talk about it because we can never truly comprehend it’s the ability, quality, form or whatever.
K- or talk about it in negative connotations. Like, for example, say - God is not bad, rather than say - it is good.
J - Yeah because I can be good, you can be good but we can’t actually measure how good, right? And whatever good, OUR LORD is, we can’t really say good. Because it’s a human word and whatever this God is, is beyond our comprehension or basic human terminology. This is why I believe that language is a barrier rather than a bridge between people, but that’s another conversation.
K- again, this makes the conversation obsolete because if we can’t define God, we can’t really define God quality.
J - But think about this, we truly cannot actually understand Love either, we can speculate and it can be everything and anything and wouldn’t that be the most accurate definition.
K - but then nothing truly can be known and if we give up - it very futile! Let’s agree to disagree on this
J - seems about right, but it is a way better definition than yours!
K- Just because you can over-complicate subjects it doesn’t make you very smart. But as you said - it can be anything and everything. I say Love is everything.
J - explain
K- Love is the only emotion, every other emotion has a little love in it, I am proposing that all emotions have love in them. All these feelings..
J - what are humans if not a congregation of loosely held feelings.
K - Anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise, in my opinion, all have love in them only indifference is devoid of love.
I can only be angry with people I truly care about.
I can only have disgust with a quality that I despise, which is further away from a quality I admire or rather love
Happiness, of course, has love, it’s the closest we can be to love.
Sadness can be in love and or in loss of love.
I can go on and on
J- this very subjective rather objective, though. If you look for answers like this you will find them but this can’t be pure knowledge.
K- Love, Joy, Surprise, Anger, Sadness and Fear are all very different emotions. Love might be everything but this doesn’t seem like the right angle.
J - what's another angle on it?
K - Ture love needs to be with Everything
J - feels like we finally came to the point. Came to the very Buddhist outlook, that you have to come to with me.

Love it!
